An Evening with Kenny Loggins

Kenny Loggins' remarkable four-decade-plus career has brought him from the top of the charts to the toast of the Grammys. He's had smash hits on Hollywood's favorite soundtracks, rocked worldwide stages, and found his way into children's hearts while bringing his smooth, beautiful voice to platinum albums of a stunning variety of genres. His gift for crafting deeply emotional music is unparalleled, and it's been a part of his life as long as he can remember.

Early in his career Kenny met and collaborated with Jim Messina and they morphed into the duo Loggins and Messina which was highly popular in the early and mid-seventies.

In the 1980s, Loggins also earned a new title: king of the movie soundtrack. Film producer Jon Peters called him in to see a rough cut of Caddyshack, and Loggins provided the cult classic's smash "I'm Alright." When a pal asked Loggins to write a few songs for an as-yet-unmade picture called Footloose, he whipped up a No. 1 blockbuster: "I had a little up-tempo thing I'd been messing with that I probably wouldn't have written if it hadn't have been for the movie," Loggins says. He scored a track on Tom Cruise's Top Gun ("Playing With the Boys") and performed that movie's indelible hit "Danger Zone."

Though he's got 12 platinum albums, a pair of Grammys, and hits on almost all the Billboard charts under his belt, Loggins is far from done. Having just released his latest children's project, the book Footloose (Moondance Press, an imprint of Quarto Publishing Group USA, October 17, 2016), inspired by his 1985 Oscar® nominated and Grammy® Award-winning "Song of the Year," he's still looking forward to what's next. "I feel very lucky that this is the way I make my living, and not a lot of people can say that," Loggins says. "I've been lucky that I love what I do and I get to keep doing it."

Throughout his 17-year career that spans a dozen albums and more than 2,500 shows throughout the U.S. and Europe, 39-year-old Aaron Watson has stubbornly and sincerely identified with the everyman––even as he’s proven to be the exception to the rule.
The latest evidence of Watson’s homespun singularity is Vaquero, an ambitious 16-song set of character-driven storytelling, level-headed cultural commentary, and love songs for grownups that promise to further solidify his status as one of today’s finest torch-bearers of real country music. Vaquero is the follow-up to 2015’s The Underdog, an acclaimed collection that also made history. Watson was sitting at his kitchen table as his wife Kim scrambled eggs when he got the call: The Underdog had debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart. It was the first time an independent, male country artist had ever outsold majors to premiere at the top spot.

Special Guest Clare Dunn

Nashville singer and songwriter Clare Dunn burst onto the country music scene following unprecedented support from Sirius XM’s The Highway and relentlessly touring coast to coast with superstars such as Bob Seger, Miranda Lambert, Florida Georgia Line, Keith Urban, and Hank Williams, Jr.   She’s been named by USA Today, Boston Globe, Billboard, and Rolling Stone as “One To Watch” and her most recent single “Tuxedo” has tallied more than 10 million streams and 100,000 downloads.

Please note that the Party Pit is Standing Room Only! In addition to presenting your ticket and a valid ID, you must pick up a wristband from the Will Call/Box Office at TJ's Corral on the day of the event after 4 p.m. to be admitted into the Party Pit. Chautauqua of Snowshoe Thompson by Steve Hale
 at Dangberg Historic Park
MINDEN, Nev.— Steve Hale will portray the legendary mailman of the Sierra, Jon A. “Snowshoe Thompson, at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, June 21, at 6:30 pm.
When Jon Thompson put on his 8-foot skis and heavy leather mail pack in 1856, he skied to Genoa and into history. His two to three day 90-mile crossings (one way) carrying the mail and valuable packages of up to 100 pounds on his back through the snow have never been physically duplicated, not even with modern equipment. This extraordinary feat has become part of the legacy and spirit of the pioneer American West.

This event is sponsored by Soaring NV, Douglas County, Bently Enterprises, Dr. James the Dentist, NV Energy, Ridge Tahoe Resort, Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, Carson Valley Inn and the Frances C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation. This event is also made possible with the assistance of Nevada Humanities, an independent affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The cost is $5 for adults, free for 16 and younger and members of Dangberg Home Ranch.

Steve Hale has been presenting historical figures from the Lake Tahoe region and the West for almost two decades. Along with John A. "Snowshoe" Thompson, they include Stephen T. Mather, George Whittell, Jr., Dr. James E. Church and John C. Fremont.

Hale has performed at National Parks, State Parks, historical societies, statue dedications, fund raising events, dinner theaters, schools, annual commemorative events, Chautauqua venues, and in repertory with other period Chautauqua characters.  He has also performed at venues from Oregon to southern California including performances for visitors in Yosemite and Death Valley National Parks.

“Steve Hale is a very talented historian whose portrayal of Snowshoe Thompson leaves you feeling as if you have truly met the legendary man in person”, said the park’s events manager Kim Harris.

The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital. This is an outdoor event, and visitors should bring their own seating. Dogs are not permitted at this event. For more information, visit dangberghomeranch.org.

Jun 24 - Jun 25    Storytelling Weekend at Dangberg Historic Park to Feature Award-winning Tellers
Storytelling Weekend at Dangberg Historic Park to Feature Award-winning Tellers
MINDEN, Nev.— A weekend of Storytelling brings a variety of talent to the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday and Sunday, June 24-25, 2017.
The featured tellers at this year’s event are Willy Claflin, world-music percussion band The Batamba Collective, Mother Lode Storytelling Guild tellers Linda Kennedy and Joan McCammon, and Chautauquan Larry Lippmann as “Hank Monk.”  The weekend also features early afternoon shows specifically for families and children, an open mic telling concert, and a session with Carson Valley residents sharing their memories.
“Storytelling is an art that is almost limitless in its possibilities of presentation,” said the park’s Events Manager, Kim Harris. “While there are performances specifically for children, the evening events will appeal to all ages.”
This event is sponsored by Soaring NV, Douglas County, Nevada Arts Council, Holiday Inn Express, and the Frances C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation.
Saturday’s featured teller is award winning storyteller Willy Claflin.  Claflin has been a professional storyteller since 1983. Along with his famous sidekick, Maynard Moose, he has appeared at hundreds of schools, colleges and libraries across the United States, and at dozens of storytelling festivals. He is a recipient of the Oracle Award (storytelling’s version of the Oscars) from the National Storytelling Network.
On Saturday, June 24 at 1:00pm, Claflin will give a concert especially for families with children ages 5 and up.  Willy and Maynard the Moose are also the authors of four award-winning children’s books, including The Uglified Ducky, which won the Texas Bluebonnet Award for best children’s book of the year. This concert is free for all to attend.
At 3:30pm on Saturday, guild tellers Linda Kennedy and Joan McCammon will emcee an Open Mic Telling Session.  Those interested should come prepared with a non-political, family-friendly story of five minutes or less. Personal tales, folk tales or cowboy poetry are all fine to tell, but not read. Please email events@dangberghomeranch to sign-up for this session, which is free of charge for tellers and audience.
Linda Kennedy has been telling stories for almost thirty years, and has told to audiences of all ages in schools, libraries, festivals, community organizations, and more. She is also a member of Foothill Storytelling Guild, Sacramento Storytelling Guild, and National Storytelling Network, and for the past seven years has been the emcee for the Open Telling Concert at the Sierra Storytelling Festival.
Joan McCammon has been telling stories in a variety of settings for the past twenty years. She began in Santa Clarita, CA, by portraying historical figures in the American Association of University Women’s “Women in History” program. She has lead school field trips as an outdoor educator and storyteller, and has been a school librarian. She is a founding member of the Foothill Storytelling Guild.
Opening the Saturday, June 24 evening concert at 5:30pm is The Batamba Collective. Band members Brandon Dodge, Ryan Burt, Chance Utter, Anthony Landers and Adrian Rodriguez are dedicated to the mixing and honoring of cultures from India to Cuba and from Brazil to Africa.  They feature Indian classical music (Hindustani or Carnatic), Samba music from Brazil, Ewe music from Ghana, Shona music from Zimbabwe, and Rumba and Bata from Cuba, as well as bringing in their own influences of orchestral music and jazz.
At 6:30pm on Saturday, award winning storyteller Willy Claflin will headline the first evening of this two-day event. Known as a “one-man storytelling festival,” Claflin tells traditional and original tales, performs a wide variety of traditional and original music, and is “speaking-mouth person” for Maynard Moose, the only quadruped on the storytelling circuit today.  He is well known for his historical tales, too; especially for his story of Victoria Claflin Woodhull, his infamous ancestor who was the first woman to run for president in 1872.
Entrance to the evening concert on Saturday is $5 for adults, free for 16 and younger, and free for members of the Friends of Dangberg Home Ranch.
Events on Sunday, June 25, starts at 1:00pm with a children's interactive concert with Linda Kennedy and Joan McCammon. This concert features stories, songs, and interactive play, ending with an audience participation melodrama. This event is free for all to attend.
At 3:30 on Sunday, Nancy Raven will lead a local group of tellers sharing their own Carson Valley memories. This group has been meeting at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center to share their stories of growing up, living, working and playing in Carson Valley. This session is free of charge.
Opening the Sunday, June 25, concert at 5:30 is Chautauquan Larry Lippmann portraying famous local stage coach driver “Hank Monk.” Lippmann has been an actor for the Carson Valley Community Theater and the Proscenium Players, performing in several plays.  He is a retired high school teacher who taught at Douglas High School.  He relates to Hank Monk because he once had a job as a bus driver, which included carting people to and from the valley and Lake Tahoe.
Hank Monk was a legendary stage coach driver from 1852 to 1886.  He was famous for his skills and for his famous ride from Genoa to Placerville with passenger Horace Greeley.  He was immortalized by Mark Twain in his book, Roughing  It
At 6:30pm on Sunday, guild tellers Linda Kennedy and Joan McCammon will headline. Each will take the stage to share their own stories and then perform as a duo telling more fun tales.
Entrance to the evening concert on Sunday is $5 for adults, free for 16 and younger, and free for members of the Friends of Dangberg Home Ranch.
The full Dangberg Summer Festival event schedule is available at dangberghomeranch.org.
This is an outdoor event and guests should bring their own seating.  Dogs should be left at home. Soft drinks and snacks will be available for purchase. The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital.

Jun 29    The Sextones to perform at Dangberg Historic Park
The Sextones to perform at Dangberg Historic Park

MINDEN, Nev.—Reno band The Sextones will perform funk and soul at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park at 6:30 pm on Thursday, June 29.

The Sextones is a family of music renegades known for viciously executed soul compositions and white-knuckle driving funk. Tipping their hats to the days of Tower of Power and Stevie Wonder, they are forging the path for a new generation of funk and soul.

Mark Sexton, who plays the guitar and sings vocals, is joined by bassist Alex Korostinsky, drummer Dan Weiss and keyboardist Ryan Taylor. The group has been playing in clubs and concert venues across the West, and this is their third year performing at the Dangberg Historic Park.

“This band is certainly a favorite with our concert attendees, so we couldn’t be happier that they are part of our Dangberg Summer Festival.  It is not easy to stay in your seat when this group is on stage,” said the park’s events manager Kim Harris.

The concert is sponsored by SoaringNV, Douglas County, Bently Ranch, Dr. James the Dentist, NV Energy, Ridge Tahoe Resort, Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, A.B.E. Printing and Copy Center, Jacobs Berry Farm, Nevada State Bank and the Frances C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation.

The concert is also funded in part by the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Admission is $10 for adults, free for 16 and younger and $5 for members of Dangberg Home Ranch.

The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital. This is an outdoor event and visitors should bring their own seating. Dogs are not permitted at this event. More information is at dangberghomeranch.org.

Upcoming concerts at the park are Aurelia Chamber Players on July 20, Ten Dollar Pony on August 3 and Ciana on August 17.  The full Dangberg Summer Festival schedule can be found on the park’s website.

###
The Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park is the 2012 and 2013 Reno-Tahoe Territory winner of the Nevada Commission on Tourism’s “Discover Your Nevada” contest. The site preserves the home of Heinrich F. Dangberg and three generations of descendants. The Dangbergs were a prominent ranching family in Carson Valley history and founded Minden in 1905. The Park includes eight historic structures built between 1857 and 1917, along with a large collection of artifacts, documents and photographs. Programs include guided tours, exhibits and other public events. The Park is operated by Friends of Dangberg Home Ranch, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, in cooperation with its owner, Douglas County.
