Aug 6    Author Bonnie Boice Nishikawa to speak on Nevada State Children's Home at Dangberg Historic Park
Author Bonnie Boice Nishikawa to speak on Nevada State Children's Home at Dangberg Historic Park

MINDEN, Nev.- Author Bonnie Boice Nishikawa will speak on her book The Nevada State Orphans/Children's Home: My Life as a "Home" Kid at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Sunday, August 6, at 10:00 am.

The Nevada State Orphans Home at Carson City was authorized in 1869 by the legislature with construction beginning the same year. The first child was admitted in October of 1870.

In 1903, the first building was replaced by a larger one, constructed of sandstone from the State Prison Quarry east of Carson City. In the 1940s, its name was changed to the Nevada State Children's Home and during the 1950s, the name Sunny Acres was also used. In 1963 the stone building was demolished and replaced with modern cottages. Until the building's demolition, it was widely considered a Carson City landmark.

This event is part of the park's Dangberg Summer Festival and is sponsored by Soaring NV, Douglas County, Carson Valley Accounting, Horsetales Magazine and the Frances C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation. Alpen Sierra Coffee Company will provide complimentary coffee and 88 Cups & More will provide baked treats.

Bonnie Boice Nishikawa, along with her brother and sister, were admitted to the Nevada State Orphans/Children's home in 1942 after the death of their mother and when their father was unable to care for them and work full time.  Nishikawa was 5 years of age when she entered the home and lived there until graduating from high school in 1955 at the age of 18.  After graduating from Reno Business College, she returned to Carson City and worked for the State of Nevada until her retirement in 1997.

In her book, Bonnie Boice Nishikawa shares many historic photographs, as well as memories of her childhood and the positive experiences she had growing up as a "Home kid".

"This book tells a wonderful story about a part of Nevada's history, which few people are aware of.  To hear a happy story from someone who grew up in an orphanage, is encouraging," said the park's events manager, Kim Harris.

The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital.  This is an outdoor event, and visitors should bring their own seating.  Dogs are not permitted at this event.  For more information, visit dangberghomeranch.org.

Upcoming speakers include author David Antonucci who will speak on his book, Fairest Picture: Mark Twain at Lake Tahoe, on August 12 and author Melba J. Ray-Leal who will give a presentation on her book Women and the Pony Express, on August 19. The park's full 2017 event schedule is available at the park's website.

Aug 9    Chautauqua of Major Ormsby and Lucky Bill Thorington at Dangberg Historic Park
Chautauqua of Major Ormsby and Lucky Bill Thorington at Dangberg Historic Park

MINDEN, Nev.- In a one man show, Chris Bayer will portray both Major William Ormsby and Lucky Bill Thorington in "The Major and the Gambler" at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 9, at 6:30 pm.

Major William Mathew Ormsby was born in 1814 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Ormsby was a teamster, failed horse dealer, citizen at large, visionary and one of the most important figures in the founding of Nevada and its capitol, Carson City. He was killed in 1860 during the Pyramid Lake Paiute uprising.

William B. "Lucky Bill" Thorington was born in 1812 in Chenango County, New York. Thorington was a resident of Carson Valley, Nevada in the 1850s and was known from Salt Lake City to San Francisco as a gambler and a "Robin Hood" who helped needy neighbors and emigrants alike. He was convicted and hung in 1858 for being an accessory to murder after the fact, although there was never any evidence proving this.

During the 1850s, Major Ormsby and Lucky Bill were arch rivals on the eastern slope of the sierras. Both were pivotal players in the development of Nevada Territory and Carson City, each spearheading their own proposal for a new territory. Their story is one of intrigue, plots and violence, and a story little remembered today.

This event is sponsored by Soaring NV, Douglas County, Bently Ranch, Dr. James the Dentist, NV Energy, Ridge Tahoe Resort, Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, Carson Valley Inn, Carson Valley Times, Carson Valley Accounting, Horsetales Magazine, Allied Sanitation and the Frances C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation. This event is also made possible with the assistance of Nevada Humanities, an independent affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The cost is $5 for adults, free for members and for 16 years and younger.

Chris Bayer is an author, historian, musician and storyteller with a deep love of the history of Carson Valley and Carson City, as well as Northern Nevada and California.  He has a passion and talent for bringing history to life while sharing well-known and little-known facts that leave his audiences with a clearer picture of the entire story.

"Just when I think that I thoroughly know our local history, I spend a few minutes with Chris Bayer and I find out how much I don't know. This is a must-see event for everyone interested in the beginnings of Nevada," said the park's events manager, Kim Harris.

The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital. This is an outdoor event, and visitors should bring their own seating. Dogs are not permitted at this event. For more information, visit dangberghomeranch.org.

The final Chautauqua performance of the season at the park will be Juanita Westbrook as "Cathay Williams: Buffalo Soldier" on August 23.   The park's full 2017 event schedule is available at the park's website.

Aug 12    Author David Antonucci to speak on Mark Twain at Dangberg Historic Park
Author David Antonucci to speak on Mark Twain at Dangberg Historic Park

MINDEN, Nev.- Author David C. Antonucci will speak on his book Fairest Picture: Mark Twain at Lake Tahoe at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 12, at 10:00 am.

In 1861, Samuel Clemens, the man who would become Mark Twain, hiked to Lake Tahoe to stake a claim for a timber ranch. He spent many blissful days on the Lake but carelessly allowed his campfire to escape, creating a spectacular wildfire. He later wrote about his experiences in his 1872 memoir, Roughing It.

Fairest Picture: Mark Twain at Lake Tahoe follows his footsteps from Carson City to the locations where he camped and relaxed at Stateline Point, Tahoe Vista, and Carnelian Bay; the same places that inspired him to declare Lake Tahoe, "the fairest picture the whole earth affords."

David C. Antonucci is a dynamic presenter who gives entertaining and informative presentations on science and history to environmental groups, news media, conference groups, historical societies, and community organizations. Antonucci is also a regular lecturer at the Tahoe Environmental Research Center. His presentation on Fairest Picture includes rich supplemental graphics, such as photos, maps, video clips and diagrams, and is suitable for general audiences, with the book available for sale and signed by the author.

3HatTrio

American Desert Folk Music.

August Concert Band

3hattrio was born when violinist Eli Wrankle was 15 years old. The group got together when his family held a small recital in their home to raise funds for Eli's high school orchestra to perform at Disneyland. After the rehearsal, family friends and veteran musicians Greg Istock and Hal Cannon asked if Eli wanted to jam. He had never played music that way before but agreed. When they finished he asked for more.  The group was born purely out of friendship, localness, and musical chemistry.

The 3hattrio plays American Desert Music. Their aim is to create a new music which responds to the natural world of their sacred homeland near Zion National Park in Utah.  They also strive to acknowledge the cultural traditions of generations of people who have worked and lived on the deserts of the American southwest. The subject matter of the songs is often desert oriented, sometimes not. Mostly, they express the desert experientially from a daily-ness of watching light off distant mesas and hearing the way sound plays off sheer sandstone cliffs. Then they play music. They don’t over-think it.

MINDEN, Nev.— Ciana will bring traditional Irish and Celtic music back to the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park at 6:30 pm, Thursday, August 17.

With fiddles, mandolin, guitars, and singers, Cíana performs tunes and songs from the Irish and Celtic tradition. They combine fiery instrumentals and musical tales of life, death, and love to create a soulful performance.

Two notes. That’s all it takes to recognize the voice of Michael McDonald. Distinctive and soulful, it is one of the most yearningly emotive instruments of our times. To this add formidable songwriting and keyboard skills, and you have an artist who has been a singular musical presence for four decades. From ‘70s-era Doobie Brothers classics such as “What A Fool Believes” and solo hits like “I Keep Forgettin’” through two highly-acclaimed Motown albums, genre-busting guest spots and innovative concept shows, the five-time Grammy Award winning McDonald is both timeless and ever-evolving.

In the mid-‘70s, McDonald joined The Doobie Brothers, helping the band redefine their funky R & B sound as a singer, keyboardist and songwriter on such Top 40 singles as “Takin’ It To The Streets,” “It Keeps You Runnin’,” “Minute By Minute” and “What A Fool Believes.”

His distinct vocal style also made him one of the world’s most sought-after session singers. Beyond his hits with The Doobies, McDonald has lent his voice to records by an A-Z of artists, including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Vince Gill and Grizzly Bear. During the ‘80s and ‘90s, his solo career zoomed from success to success on the wings of evergreen hits like “Sweet Freedom,” “On My Own” (a duet with Patti LaBelle) and the Grammy-winning duet with James Ingram “Yah Mo B There.”

With a career that encompasses five Grammys, numerous chart successes, personal and professional accolades, as well as collaborations with some of the world’s most prominent artists, Michael McDonald remains an enduring force in popular music.

Aug 19    Author Melba J. Ray-Leal to speak on Women and the Pony Express at Dangberg Historic Park
Author Melba J. Ray-Leal to speak on
Women and the Pony Express at Dangberg Historic Park
MINDEN, Nev.— Author Melba J. Ray-Leal will speak on her book Women and the Pony Express in a  free event at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 19, at 10:00 am.
The Pony Express was a relay of horses and riders which delivered express mail during 1860 and 1861, over 1966 miles between St. Joseph, MO and Sacramento, CA in ten days’ time.  The present National Pony Express Association began in 1978 to re-establish, identify and re-ride the historic Pony Express Trail.  For the first 12 years, the organization did not permit women to ride in the Annual Re-Ride Celebration with the explanation that there were no known women riders in the original operation.
The National Pony Express Association celebrated the 130th year of the Annual Re-Ride of the Pony Express in 1990. This was also the first year women were permitted to ride in the Annual Re-Ride due to Melba J. Ray-Leal’s tenacity and tireless efforts on the behalf of women who desired to participate.  In her book, Ray-Leal tells of her love for the history of the Pony Express and her own journey to becoming a full riding member of the California division of the organization.  She also shares her personal tragedies and triumphs during those years.
Melba J. Ray-Leal joined the National Pony Express Association in 1985. Ray-Leal has been a trails advocate for the preservation of trails since 1983, and has served on the board of the El Dorado Trails Advisory Committee and been member of “Trails Now”, both located in Placerville, CA.  She also served as Trails Representative and Special Project Manager in the California Division of the National Pony Express Association from 1990 through 2005, and was the first woman to serve as president of that division.
“Being a member, myself, of the Nevada Division of the Pony Express, I appreciate Melba J. Ray-Leal’s passion for this remarkable history, and her desire to be allowed to participate fully in the sharing of it.  Her presentation is a must-see for anyone else that shares this passion,” said the park’s events manager, Kim Harris.
The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital.  This is an outdoor event, and visitors should bring their own seating.  Dogs are not permitted at this event.  For more information, visit dangberghomeranch.org. Aug 23    Chautauqua of Governor John Sparks at Dangberg Historic Park
Chautauqua of Governor John Sparks at Dangberg Historic Park

MINDEN, Nev.- Michael E. Fischer will portray the tenth governor of Nevada, John Sparks, at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 23, at 6:30 pm.

John Sparks was born in Mississippi on August 30, 1843. Sparks' education was limited and attained in the common schools of his native state. Before moving to Nevada, he worked in the cattle industry in Texas and Wyoming. John Sparks first entered politics as the Silver-Democratic gubernatorial candidate. Sparks then went on to win the general election in 1902. He ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 1904, but was reelected to a second term as governor in 1906. During his tenure, a state railroad commission was organized; the Nevada state police was formed; the public school system was restructured; irrigation laws were sanctioned; and a miners' eight-hour workday bill was authorized. Also, a state engineer office was established; and the town of Sparks was named for him in 1904.

Governor Sparks will tell of his days as an Indian fighter with the Texas Frontier Rangers and a trail driver of cattle after the Civil War. The Governor will also share stories of his relationships with H.F. Dangberg, Sr., serving as pallbearer at his burial, and with Fred Dangberg, Jr. who served as Senator under Governor Sparks during his first term in office.

Michael E. Fischer was raised and educated in Reno public schools, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nevada Reno and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Southern California. After working in private practice for 31 years, Fischer retired from dentistry and was appointed Director of the Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs, serving in both Governor Gibbons' and Governor Sandoval's Cabinet until the department was formally disbanded. He is now an independent scholar whose interests include the history of Nevada cowboys and ranching, politics, bootlegging, gambling, and crime.

"Michael E. Fischer is an excellent historian and talented Chautauquan.  Once you meet 'Governor Sparks' you will feel automatically transported back in time," said the park's events manager, Kim Harris.

The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital. This is an outdoor event, and visitors should bring their own seating. Dogs are not permitted at this event.
