Children that would like to learn more about these fascinating carvings that depict a wide variety of shapes and figures should meet outside the Mormon Station museum at 1 p.m. on May 13.  Children will be provided with the materials to make their own modern “petroglyphs,” which will be theirs to keep. WHAT IS LOCAL ?

We receive many phone calls from customers both present and future wanting to know
the story behind their particular food. They want to be able to see the farmer’s face that produced it, they want to have been able to visit the farm to see his production methods and be able to develop some relationship and trust.
We invite people to come to our farm and see how and where their food is produced.

Our interpretation of LOCAL is staying within our community.

Having the option to purchase locally grown food has many benefits.

Locally grown food is full of flavor. When grown locally, the crops are picked at their peak of ripeness versus being harvested early in order to be shipped and distributed to your local retail store. Many times produce at local markets has been picked within 24 hours of your purchase.

Eating local food is eating seasonally. Even though we wish strawberries were grown year round in Michigan, the best time to eat them is when they can be purchased directly from a local grower. They are full of flavor and taste better than the ones available in the winter that have traveled thousands of miles and picked before they were ripe.

Local food has more nutrients. Local food has a shorter time between harvest and your table, and it is less likely that the nutrient value has decreased. Food imported from far-away states and countries is often older, has traveled and sits in distribution centers before it gets to your store.

Local food supports the local economy. The money that is spent with local farmers and growers all stays close to home and is reinvested with businesses and services in your community.

Local food benefits the environment. By purchasing locally grown foods you help maintain farmland and green and/or open space in your community.

Local foods promote a safer food supply. The more steps there are between you and your food’s source the more chances there are for contamination. Food grown in distant locations has the potential for food safety issues at harvesting, washing, shipping and distribution.

We invite people to come to our farm and see how and where their food is produced.

May 19 - May 20    Kite Flying Weekend at Dangberg Historic Park
Kite Flying Weekend at Dangberg Historic Park
MINDEN, Nev.— Something in the Wind, a free kite flying event, will take place at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday and Sunday, May 19 and 20, 2018.
Join us in our fifth year in celebration of the Washoe Zephyr as Something in the Wind features expert kite flyer Cameron Kauffman along with his family, of CoolKiter.com. From 9:00 am until 5:00 pm both days, the Kauffman’s will demonstrate several models of their large and unusual kites, as well as answer questions.  The public is also welcome to bring kites to fly and learn from the visiting experts throughout both days. A limited number of kites will be available for purchase.
Also on both days, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm, elementary-school aged children can participate in several simple wind-related craft projects hosted by the Carson Valley Arts Council, and make their own kites (while supplies last) with the help of Friends of Dangberg Home Ranch volunteers. All craft supplies will be provided.
Dangberg Home Ranch volunteers will once again work with attendees in making and flying giant and artistic bubbles.
This year’s event will also include a “Kite Giveaway” for children.  Each elementary-school aged child that attends can enter a giveaway drawing for the chance to win a new kite.  The drawing will take place 3 times each day during the weekend, once at 10:00 am, Noon and 2:00 pm.  Participants must be present to win.
“Colorful wind banners will adorn the park and giant bubbles will blow about, as families are encouraged to bring a picnic and spend all day to play”, says Events Manager Kim Harris.
Something in the Wind is sponsored by Douglas County, E.L. Cord Foundation, Francis C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation, Carson Valley Accounting, Full Circle Soils & Compost and Horse Tales Magazine.
The full Dangberg Summer Festival event schedule is available at, dangberghomeranch.org.
This is a free outdoor event. Please no dogs, legitimate service animals only. The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital.

Crafts in the Orchard: Make your own Covered Wagon (Children’s Activity)
Join park staff for Crafts in the Orchard. Mormon Station is located on the California Trail, and in the mid-1800s countless wagon trains stopped here to get supplies, rest, and prepare for the challenging trek over the Sierra Nevada Mountains. During this activity, children will be lead through the process of making their own miniature covered wagon using arts and crafts materials.  Park staff will discuss what life was like for pioneers on the California Trail, including the hardships of living in a covered wagon for several months at a time. This activity is designed for children ages 5-12, but all are welcome to participate. All necessary supplies will be provided.
