Jul 11    Chautauqua of P.T. Barnum at Dangberg Historic Park
Chautauqua of P.T. Barnum at Dangberg Historic Park

MINDEN, Nev.- Chautauquan Doug Mishler will portray circus showman P.T. Barnum at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, July 11 at 6:30 pm.

Phineas Taylor Barnum was an American showman, politician and businessman remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and for founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus. The circus business was the source of much of his enduring fame. He established "P. T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan & Hippodrome", a traveling circus, menagerie, and museum of "freaks", which adopted many names over the years.

As an entrepreneur, and a man of many talents and ideas, P.T. Barnum had a grand presence telling wondrously fractured tales gathered during his 50 years of humbug and showmanship. His stories of mermaids, dwarfs and circuses uncover the heart and soul of 19th century American culture.

Over the last twenty years, Chautauqua scholar Doug Mishler has become nationally recognized for bringing "history to life." In addition to P.T. Barnum, Mishler has presented Jack Warner, D.W. Griffith, Theodore Roosevelt, Stonewall Jackson, and fourteen other historical figures in Chautauquas nationwide. Mishler has a Ph.D. in American cultural history from the University of Nevada, Reno.

"Doug Mishler is a true chameleon and an amazing re-enactor.  He is a favorite of past summer series and fundraising events here.  We're very pleased to have him return this season with a new historic character portrayal," said the park's events manager, Kim Harris.

This event is part of the park's Dangberg Summer Festival and is sponsored by Douglas County, Carson Valley Accounting, Full Circle Soils & Compost, Horse Tales Publications, Dr. James the Dentist, Allied Sanitation Services, Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, Minden Fortnightly Club and the Frances C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation. This event is also made possible with the assistance of Nevada Humanities, an independent affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The cost for the Chautauqua event is $5 for adults, free for members and for 16 years and younger.

The full Dangberg Summer Festival event schedule is available at dangberghomeranch.org.

The Dangberg ranch house will be open for one hour before the concert for anyone who would like an introduction to the Dangberg family history and the park's artifact collection.

This an outdoor event, and visitors should bring their own seating. Please no dogs, legitimate service animals only. The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital.

Upcoming Chautauquans for this season include Larry Lippmann who will portray "Stagecoach Robber Black Bart" on July 18; Deke DiMarzo will portray "Watchman Alex Coryell: Virginia City Police Department 1873-1892" on August 15: and Cindy Southerland will portray "Annie H. Martin: The First Woman to Head a U.S. Treasury Facility, the Assay Office at Carson City" on August 29.  On Saturday, August 4, at 10:00 am, in a free presentation, Michael Fischer will portray H.F. Dangberg in "Curmudgeons, Comrades and Fools from My Days in the Valley".

Travels to Spain instilled a love for the Spanish Flamenco style of playing. Now a professional musician with eighteen years of experience, he lives part-time in western Nevada.

"A quiet passion became the flame that has gifted me so many warm memories and has now become the passion that fires my life," Merlos said. More information about Merlos, and samples of his music, is at miltonmerlos.com.

"Milton Merlos is a Carson Valley favorite and always puts on an excellent show.  We are very happy to welcome him back this season," said the park's events manager, Kim Harris.

This event is part of the park's Dangberg Summer Festival and is sponsored by Douglas County, Carson Valley Accounting, Full Circle Soils & Compost, Horse Tales Publications, Allied Sanitation Services, Minden Fortnightly Club, A.B.E. Printing and Copy Center, Carson Valley Inn, Carson Valley Sertoma, Jacobs Berry Farm, Cowboy's Café, Personal Pedigree Genealogy and the Frances C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation.

The concert is also funded in part by the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

The full Dangberg Summer Festival event schedule is available at dangberghomeranch.org.

The Dangberg ranch house will be open for one hour before the concert for anyone who would like an introduction to the Dangberg family history and the park's artifact collection.

Jul 15    Author, Steve Archard at Dangberg Home Ranch
Author Steve Achard to speak at Dangberg Historic Park

MINDEN, Nev.- Author and grandson of Fred Dangberg Jr., Steve Achard will speak on his book Lost Legacy of Carson Valley, as well as his memories of growing up at the Home Ranch, in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Sunday, July 15, at 10:00 am.

The book Lost Legacy of the Carson Valley, which Steve Achard co-authored with Conrad Buedel, shares the history of H. F. Dangberg Sr., as well as the rise and fall of one of Nevada's most prominent pioneer families.

H. F. Dangberg Sr. helped to shape the agricultural and livestock history of Carson Valley.  Beginning with 160 acres in 1856, he built and empire of ranches and farms that covered over 30,000 acres at the time of his death in 1904.

Dangberg's four sons continued the legacy of H.F. Dangberg Land & Live Stock Company, built the town of Minden and played a major role in the development of Douglas County.

Steve "Dink" Achard, only son of Ruth Dangberg Achard, is the last surviving male of the H.F. Dangberg Jr. family tree.  Achard grew up at the Dangberg Home Ranch which is now known as the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park. His unique insight and first-hand experiences brings the Dangberg family to life.

"It is always a delight to have Steve return to the park to share his memories and stories from when he lived in Carson Valley.  There are many more stories than those shared in his book," said the park's events manager, Kim Harris.

This event is part of the park's Dangberg Summer Festival and is sponsored by Douglas County, Carson Valley Accounting, Full Circle Soils & Compost, Horse Tales Publications and the Frances C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation.

The full Dangberg Summer Festival event schedule is available at dangberghomeranch.org.

The Dangberg ranch house will be open for one hour before the concert for anyone who would like an introduction to the Dangberg family history and the park's artifact collection.

This is a free outdoor event. Visitors should bring their own seating. Please no dogs, legitimate service animals only. The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital.

Upcoming speakers for this season include Authors Karen Dustman and Laurie Hickey who will speak on their book The Old Genoa Cemetery; A Walking Tour - Book 1 on July 28; Chautauquan Michael Fisher will portray H.F. Dangberg Sr. presenting "Curmudgeons, Comrades and Fools From My Days in the Valley." on August 4; and Author Robin Holabird will present "Elvis, Marilyn and the Space Aliens: Nevada Screen Icons." Jul 18    Chautauqua, Larry Lippmann as "Stagecoach Robber Black Bart" at Dangberg Home Ranch
Chautauqua of Stage Robber Black Bart at Dangberg Historic Park

MINDEN, Nev.- Chautauquan Larry Lippmann will portray notorious stagecoach robber Black Bart at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, July 18 at 6:30 pm.

Stagecoach robber Black Bart was one of the most famous bandits of the old West.  Between 1875 and 1883 he successfully robbed twenty-eight Wells Fargo stagecoaches without harming anyone and without taking a dime from any passenger.  The story of how he was so successful and how he was eventually apprehended, ranks among the great legends of all time.

Larry Lippmann is an actor, educator, historian, and political theorist and specializes in research of the old west, particularly as it relates to Nevada and California.  Lippmann has performed as a Chautauquan portraying Hank Monk, the famous stagecoach driver of Carson City and Douglas County.  He has acted with the Carson Valley Community Theater and with the Proscenium Players in several productions.  Lippmann has taught at Douglas High School and is currently an adjunct instructor at Western Nevada College.

"Larry is a dedicated researcher and a focused re-enactor.  He truly brings his characters to life in a way that helps us to understand more about the old West," said the park's events manager, Kim Harris.

This event is part of the park's Dangberg Summer Festival and is sponsored by, Allied Sanitation Services, Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, Minden Fortnightly Club and the Frances C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation. This event is also made possible with the assistance of Nevada Humanities, an independent affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Jul 26    Concert, Todd Morgan and the Emblems playing rock and roll, jazz, and rockabilly at Dangberg Home Ranch
Todd Morgan and the Emblems in concert at Dangberg Historic Park
MINDEN, Nev.—  In a return engagement, Sacramento area band, Todd Morgan and the Emblems, will bring 50s, 60s and Rockabilly style music to Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park at 6:30 pm, Thursday, July 26.

Todd Morgan and the Emblems is a young four-piece band, led by singer-songwriter and musician Todd Morgan. The band’s music consists of original pop and rock music, along with covers of 50s and 60s Rock-n-Roll and up to present day pop and rock songs. The band has recorded 3 albums.

Todd Morgan is not an Elvis impersonator or "tribute" artist to past rock pioneers. Morgan is a young dynamo of talent and musically organic. He is an artist able to faithfully recreate the genius of such pioneering artists as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, as well as Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Ray Charles.
“We are so excited that Todd Morgan and the Emblems will return to the park for our 2018 Summer Festival.  They were very well received last year and attendees truly enjoyed their presentation,” said the park’s events manager, Kim Harris.
This event is part of the park's Dangberg Summer Festival and is sponsored by Douglas County, Carson Valley Accounting, Full Circle Soils & Compost, Horse Tales Publications, Allied Sanitation Services, Minden Fortnightly Club, A.B.E. Printing and Copy Center, Carson Valley Inn, Carson Valley Sertoma, Jacobs Berry Farm, Cowboy’s Café, Personal Pedigree Genealogy and the Frances C. and William P.
Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for members and free for 16 and younger.
Visitors should bring their own seating and are welcome to bring a picnic dinner to enjoy. Please no dogs, legitimate service animals only. The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital.

The Old Genoa Cemetery: A Walking Tour – Book 1 is the first book in a four volume series of books written by historians Karen Dustman and Laurie Hickey, which highlight Genoa and Carson Valley’s earliest and most prominent settlers.

Laurie Hickey is a lifelong resident of Carson Valley and descendent of more than one pioneer family of the area.  She has served on the board of the Douglas County Historical Society, has given historic tours of the towns and cemeteries of Carson Valley and has also portrayed in Chautauqua Eliza Cook, a suffragette and the first woman doctor in Nevada.
Local photographer Judy Wickwire, whose photos appear in the book, will also give a brief presentation on photographing historic sites.
