Carson Valley Arts Council (CVAC) presents local artist Dana Childs also known as d'Lauren. The exhibit can be viewed Monday through Saturday10am to 5pm. Dana's paintings will be available for purchase throughout the exhibit.

CVAC will be hosting an artist's reception on Friday, May 10, 5 pm to 7 pm. Refreshments will be served and it is free to the public. Come and meet Dana and preview her amazing work.

"Variety is the spice of life!" declare the educationally eclectic Childs. She has been driven by an inexhaustible desire to learn, and then to pass on that which she learns to others. "One of my greatest passions in life is to either keep the flame of our innate love for learning alive, or to reignite this flame in the hearts of those whose flames have dwindled, or been completely dowsed," says Childs. Whatever the subject matter, she remains enthusiastic about sharing information and helping others build skills that will serve them and others well.

Childs has been painting watercolors professionally for over two decades and has taught watercolor as well as graphite and acrylic mediums for twenty plus years, Childs brings an in-depth understanding of how to connect with her students and pass on skills that empower her students to create to their hearts desire, with amazing results. "My job, if I do it well, is to work myself out of a job," she says.

Childs also teaches an array of painting classes at the Douglas County Community Center that focuses on technique and expressiveness. All levels are welcome in her classes. Please explore Dana's website at http://www.dlauren.net. She can also be reached by e-mail at tfa.create@gmail.com or by phone at 530-306-2379.

Jul 18    Movie Night: "The General"

Movie Night and Western Jamboree at Dangberg Historic Park

MINDEN, Nev.-  A classic film, cowboy poetry and western music in mid-July at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park

On Thursday, July 18, at 6:30 pm, train expert Jim Clark will introduce and provide commentary on the 1926 film The General.

The General is a silent comedy film released by United Artists. It was inspired by the Great Locomotive Chase, a true story of an event that occurred during the American Civil War. The story was adapted from the memoir The Great Locomotive Chase by William Pittenger. The film stars Buster Keaton who was co-director along with Clyde Bruckman. The General is now often ranked among the greatest American films ever made.

Jim Clark, known to many as "The Train Man" is a veteran of more than 250 films. Clark is an engineer and train coordinator who is associated with several of the biggest films with trains and their Hollywood stars.  Some of those films include "The Lone Ranger", "Wild, Wild, West", "Into the West" and "Water for Elephants".

The suggested donation is $5 per person. The Dangberg ranch house will be open for one hour before the event for anyone who would like an introduction to the park's history.

"Jim Clark's expertise, along with a great classic movie, will definitely make it a fun evening for everyone," said Kim Harris, the park's events manager.

On Saturday, July 20, at 10:00 am, the Dangberg Home Ranch Western Jamboree will open with cowboy poet and master of ceremonies Tony Argento.  Argento is not only a poet, but a humorist, story teller, historian and writer. In 2013 he was the featured Cowboy Poet of the "National Day of the Cowboy" celebration at the Kennewick, Washington Cowboy Gathering.

Cowboy poets Diana Miller and Harold "Horse bard Roy" Miller will take the stage next. Harold Miller's stories and poems have been published in several western magazines such as Western Horseman and Natural Horse Magazine. Miller was nominated for Cowboy Poet of the year in 2006 and 2008 for the Western Music Association.  He has published five books, appeared in two documentaries, three commercials and been cast as a western character in a number of films.

When not reciting their poems around the country, the Millers raise gaited horses in Stagecoach, Nevada.

Two musical acts will perform at the jamboree.  At noon, the Sierra Sweethearts will take the stage.  The Sierra Sweethearts are Northern Nevada's premier all woman ensemble. Winners of the 2017 "Forte Award for Northern Nevada's Best Bluegrass/Americana Band", the Sweethearts serve up an exciting mix of bluegrass, cowboy, swing and country classics, spiced with generous amounts of humor.

Rounding out the event's entertainment, Mike Beck will take the stage at 2:30 pm. Beck is an engaging acoustic solo artist who is a regularly featured performer at The National Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering. He has seven albums with original songs that have been recognized as some of the finest compositions on Western Americana.

"We couldn't be more excited about the line-up of such talented performers for this event," Harris continued.

Jul 24    Basque researcher to present findings at Dangberg Historic Park
Basque researcher to present findings at Dangberg Historic Park

MINDEN, Nev.— Iker Saitua, a researcher of the history of Basque people in the United States, will present “Vital to the Industry: John B. Dangberg, Basque Immigrants, and Nevada’s Sheep Industry in World War II” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednewsday, July 24, at 10:00am.
This lecture explores how John Dangberg, the second son of Dangberg Land & Live Stock Co. founder H. F. Dangberg, headed a group of Western woolgrowers to recruit Basque immigrants during the Second World War, when demand for all kinds of labor rose.
The lack of labor in the sheep industry became increasingly critical during the war. John Dangberg’s organizing efforts and leadership of a group of sheep ranchers of western Nevada were heavily directed at recruiting more Basque immigrants, despite the restrictive immigration laws. Much of those efforts were aimed at finding ways to get around those restrictions. As the war continued, sheep ranchers from Nevada and other western states continued an uphill battle to secure these Basque sheepherders.
Saitua is a Basque Government Postdoctoral Fellow in history at the University of California, Riverside. He received his PhD from University of Nevada, Reno in 2016. Later, he presented his dissertation at the University of the Basque Country in northern Spain, receiving summa cum laude honors.
Born and raised in the Basque Country, Saitua holds two PhD degrees, with specialties concerning immigration, labor, livestock grazing, international relations, and the American West. His work has focused largely on the intersections between agricultural labor, natural resources, and livestock raising. He is an expert on Basque immigration and the sheep industry of the West, and is the author of Basque Immigrants and Nevada’s Sheep Industry: Geopolitics and the Making of an Agricultural Workforce, 1880-1954 (University of Nevada Press, 2019).
The 2019 Dangberg Summer Festival is sponsored by Douglas County, Bently Heritage, Carson Valley Accounting, Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, Dr. James the Dentist, Edward Jones Investments – Tim Cleveland, Horse Tales, Carson Valley Inn, Holiday Inn Express – Minden, Jacobs Family Berry Farm, Nevada State Bank and the Frances C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation.
This is a free event. Please bring your own seating and no pets allowed - service animals only.
The Dangberg ranch house will be open for one hour before the events for anyone who would like an introduction to the Dangberg family history and the park's artifact collection.
The full 2019 Dangberg Summer Festival event schedule is available at Dangberg.org.

Chautauqua of Duane L. Bliss: Lumber and Mining Magnate

Doug Mishler as Duane L. Bliss: lumber and mining magnate and founder of the Carson and Tahoe Lumber and Fluming Company

Chautauqua of Duane L. Bliss and Millennium Bugs in concert at Dangberg Historic Park

MINDEN, Nev.-  The month of July will end with a Chautauqua presentation of Duane L. Bliss, as August begins with the Millennium Bugs in concert at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

On Wednesday, July 31, at 6:30 pm, Doug Mishler will portray Duane L. Bliss, Comstock era lumber baron of Lake Tahoe.

Duane Leroy Bliss was a 19th-century American timber and mining magnate. Bliss founded the Carson and Tahoe Lumber and Fluming Company from Gold Hill, Nevada. He eventually controlled every facet of the business from the land to the timber, ships and barges to move the timber, flumes and the railroad system he built.

Over the last twenty years, Chautauqua scholar Doug Mishler has become nationally recognized for bringing "history to life." In addition to Duane L. Bliss, Mishler has presented P.T. Barnum, Theodore Roosevelt, Jack Warner, D.W. Griffith, Stonewall Jackson, and fourteen other historical figures in Chautauquas nationwide. Mishler has a Ph.D. in American cultural history from the University of Nevada, Reno.

"We never tire of Doug Mishler's brilliant portrayals of characters that have had significant impact in our history," said Kim Harris, the park's events manager.

On Thursday, August 1, at 6:30 pm, The Millennium Bugs, a jazz combo associated with the Mile High Jazz Band, will perform in concert.

David Bugli and the band members have been playing a variety of jazz styles since the late 1990s. The group plays songs from the Great American Songbook and are inspired by the tradition of spontaneous improvisation

"We're very excited to have the Millennium Bugs at the park for the first time, and we're looking forward to a fun evening of classic jazz music," Harris continued.

The ticket price for the concert is $15 for adults, $10 for members and free for 16 years and younger.  Space is limited and the event could sell out.  Non-member tickets can be purchased at dangberg.eventbrite.com.

Please bring your own seating to all events and no pets allowed - service animals only. Guests are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy as no food or beverages will be sold at either of these events.

The Dangberg ranch house will be open for one hour before each event for anyone who would like an introduction to the park's history.

The 2019 Dangberg Summer Festival is sponsored by Douglas County, Bently Heritage, Carson Valley Accounting, Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, Dr. James the Dentist, Edward Jones Investments - Tim Cleveland, Horse Tales, Carson Valley Inn, Holiday Inn Express - Minden, Jacobs Family Berry Farm, Nevada State Bank and the Frances C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation.

Upcoming events include Glen Whorton of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society speaking on "The Great State Embezzlement" on Sunday, August 4; Mo'z Motley Blues in concert on Thursday, August 8; Bob Nylen of the Nevada State Museum speaking on the "History of Baseball in Nevada" on Saturday, August 10; and Anita Watson giving a Chautauqua portrayal of "Mary McNair Mathews" on Wednesday, August 17.

The full 2019 Dangberg Summer Festival event schedule is available at Dangberg.org.

The Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital. The site preserves the home of Heinrich F. Dangberg and his descendants, a prominent ranching family in Carson Valley history that founded Minden in 1905. The site includes eight historic structures built between 1857 and 1917, along with a collection of 39,000 artifacts, documents and photographs acquired and used by the Dangberg family.
